Risk Management Programmes (RMP's)

Under the Animal Products Act 1999, primary processors of eggs are required to register a Risk Management Programme (RMP) before commencing processing.  An RMP is designed to identify, control, manage and eliminate or minimise hazards and other risk factors so that the resulting Animal Product is fit for intended purpose, under Part 2 of the Animal Products Act.  Primary processing includes egg production -  laying and grading, as well as packing of whole shell eggs.

Existing businesses are required to adhere to the Animal Products Act over a two year transition. Large primary egg processors (those that are levy payers under the Commodity Levy (Eggs) Order 1999) must have had a RMP registered by 1 July 2004.  Remaining primary egg processors must have had a RMP registered by 1 July 2005.
